The number of anti-aging treatments in the market today is overwhelming. Two common treatments are IPL laser and Fraxel. The following elaborates the difference between the two to help you decide which treatment best serves your needs.
What is IPL Laser Treatment?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treats hyperpigmentation (age spots), and spider veins (broken capillaries) brought about by sun damage. IPL also plumps a patient’s skin by stimulating collagen production. Modern IPL machines are used for hair removal.
How IPL Works
IPL works by using short blasts of intense light to penetrate under the patient’s skin surface. This light damages the melanin responsible for age spots or blood vessels that cause broken capillaries. IPL boosts elastin and collagen production and repairs your skin leaving an even skin tone. IPL takes 3-6 treatments, one month apart for best results.
Candidates for IPL Laser Treatment
IPL is suitable for a person with light skin suffering from lack of firmness or laxity, broken capillaries, and sun damage.
Fraxel is a fractional skin resurfacing laser used for smoothing out fine lines, reducing the size of pores, getting rid of unwanted discolorations and pigmentations and improving skin texture and skin tone.
How Fraxel Works
Fraxel works by executing tiny injuries into a patient’s skin. Each cut is one tenth of the diameter of the hair shaft. The skin between the injuries is left undamaged. The treated areas regenerate new collagen, which helps provide healthy and youthful skin.
A numbing agent or anesthetic is applied to the affected area one or so hour before treatment. You might also be given a sedative to help you relax throughout the procedure. Air will be blown on your skin throughout the process to keep the skin surface cool.
Candidates for Fraxel Treatment
Fraxel treatment is best suited for persons with wrinkles, acne scarring, fine lines, discoloration and sun damage.
Summary of the Differences between IPL Laser Treatment and Fraxel Treatment
IPL is a light based treatment whereas Fraxel treatment is based on laser energy. IPL uses short bursts of light energy to penetrate through your skin, acting as a viable option for unwanted hair, brown spots, and blood vessels. You can also use it for skin rejuvenation. Fraxel is more powerful and accurate for enhancing and tightening your skin.
