Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive way to improve the appearance and restore a youthful glow to your skin. It is an effective way to reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and sunspots. This process works by gently removing and exfoliating the outermost layers of skin, opening up and unclogging the pores.
Unlike other more invasive procedures, no chemicals or lasers are used. Instead, micro crystals made of aluminum oxide are used to exfoliate the skin gently. In addition to removing dead skin cells, the microdermabrasion process stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. This causes the skin to heal quickly and regain its youthful, rejuvenated appearance faster than normal.
Because of the simplicity of the process and the quick recovery time, this treatment is often referred to as a lunchtime procedure. The process itself takes around 60 minutes and requires no downtime for the patient.
What Happens during a Microdermabrasion Process?
The first step typically involves cleaning your face using a specialized gel. Next, a member of our medical team will begin the microdermabrasion process with a small handheld device that will gently sand the face with micro aluminum oxide crystals. The tube is placed firmly against the skin of treated areas. At the same time that it delivers the aluminum crystals, it vacuums up used crystals along with dead skin and debris.
The microdermabrasion wand is moved slowly and evenly across the face, treating all areas in order to provide consistent skin texture and color. Once the treatment has been completed, a soothing and nourishing sunblock and cream will be applied to your face. This will provide your skin the protection it needs while helping it maintain the softer, smoother results of microdermabrasion.
Is the Procedure Safe?
Unlike dermabrasion, which requires general or local anesthetic and is applied using a powered device, microdermabrasion is less invasive. It does not leave the skin looking red or irritated, and there is no extensive period of skin sensitivity.
The aluminum oxide crystals that are used are perfectly safe and are non-toxic, and have not been shown to cause cancer or allergic reactions. During the process, your eyes are protected by special glasses that block any stray crystals. The device used in the procedure automatically vacuums up micro crystals that are released during the process, eliminating the risk of ingesting any crystals. Although even if stray crystals are swallowed, they are non-toxic.
Healthy individuals who are looking to get rid of light acne scars, even out blotchy skin, or remove fine wrinkles are ideal candidates for microdermabrasion. This procedure will rejuvenate your skin and create subtle, natural results.
