For individuals with excess fat and loose skin in the abdominal area, a tummy tuck can achieve your desired results. At Southeastern Dermatology Cosmetic Surgery Center, our tummy tuck surgery can slim your figure and tighten your skin when traditional methods such as diet and exercise fall short.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
There are several cosmetic procedures available to remove excess fat in the abdomen, but only tummy tuck surgery can remove unwanted fat and skin while also toning and tightening the abdominal muscles.
Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery can correct sagging abdominal skin and protruding stomachs that result from pregnancy, significant weight loss, heredity and other factors.
In a typical tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Hendricks will make incisions horizontally between the belly button and pubic area. Incision size and placement are often determined by the amount of excess skin being removed, and can be discussed with Dr. Hendricks prior to surgery.
Once the abdominal skin is lifted, excess fat and skin are removed and weakened, or separated muscles are tightened. Doctor Hendricks will then drape and suture the skin back together.
Am I a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?
While a tummy tuck can achieve a slimmer waistline and a more fit appearance, it is not intended as a substitute for proper diet and exercise. Ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery should:
- Be in good overall health
- Have realistic cosmetic expectations and goals for surgery
- Do not smoke
- Are within their target weight but have excess fat and skin that cannot be targeted with diet and exercise
During your consultation at Southeastern Dermatology, our medical team will help you determine if tummy tuck surgery is right for you.
What is Recovery Like?
After surgery, incisions will be bandaged, and small surgical drains may be placed to collect excess fluid. A compression garment may also be issued to protect your new contours and control swelling.
You can expect bruising and swelling for several weeks after tummy tuck surgery. You will be prescribed pain relievers to control any residual discomfort. Although results are immediate visible, they may not be fully evident until healing is complete. Doctor Hendricks will advise you on aftercare instructions as well as when you can return to work and normal activities.
Tummy tuck results are permanent but can be affected by major changes such as pregnancy, significant weight gain, and the aging process.
