In all of this time, no one has been able to create a razor that doesn’t get dull, nick your skin, cause ingrown hairs or leave behind a red, angry-looking rash. Even if you don’t suffer from sensitive skin, the ongoing expense and time commitment can leave you searching for other options. If you’re tired of shaving and want to get rid of body hair permanently, laser hair removal may be just what you’ve been looking for.
Who is Right for Laser Hair Removal?
Laser treatments can be received by people of all skin tones, regardless of hair color or type. However, certain skin conditions could make laser inadvisable.
Those who have vitiligo, a condition that causes pigmentation errors in the skin shouldn’t have treatments. The same can be said for people afflicted with psoriasis, as the treatments can cause these conditions to get worse.
You also can’t receive laser if you are currently suffering an outbreak of acne, eczema or herpes on the treatment site. Once the outbreak has cleared, treatment can commence.
Preparing for Laser Treatments
Laser hair removal works by targeting the roots of the hair with heat. This affects the hair follicles and makes them unable to produce hair. For this reason, you will need to have hairs in the follicles for treatment.
Laser will do absolutely nothing if you’ve waxed, plucked, threaded or otherwise ripped the hair out. You can shave if you like, as shaving leaves the roots behind.
The Treatment Process
When you come into our office, you’ll be shown to a room and asked to expose the treatment area. If you’re having your legs or bikini line treated, you’ll be provided with a sheet. You’ll need to wear eye protection, which we will provide.
The laser is applied to your skin in short bursts. Most patients tell us it feels like a rubber band snapping against their skin.
Once the entire area has been treated, you’re free to go. Over the next few days, you’ll notice the treated hair disappearing. It will never grow back.
The Need for Multiple Treatments
Many people wonder why you need multiple treatments if the effect is permanent. The reason for this is that all of our hair is not growing at the same time. Some hair follicles are dormant during your first treatment. Some of them will be treated on a second or third visit.
If you have a lot of hair on different cycles, it may take up to five or six treatments to catch all of the hairs in a growth cycle. This is rare, with most people only requiring between three and five treatments to achieve a smooth result.
