Juvederm® is a cosmetic injectable filler containing the active ingredient, hyaluronic acid. This filler is used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds in the facial area. Juvederm® offers a number of benefits in comparison to other injectables and is a trusted treatment on the market today.
Benefits of Juvederm®
Juvederm® is a smooth gel that works to fill in lines and wrinkles under the skin. The technology used to produce this unique formula is known as Hylacross. Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar in the body, works as a cushioning agent and holds water at the site of injection. This cushioning results in a smoother, more voluminous appearance to the facial area that can be achieved in just one treatment.
Another benefit of Juvederm® is that some products contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, making the injection process more comfortable for patients. In addition, Juvederm® Ultra Plus is formulated to successfully correct even the deepest wrinkles and lines.
Precautions to Consider
Juvederm® is appropriate for the majority of patients; however, some people are not good candidates for the procedure. If you have severe allergies, particularly to Gram-positive proteins or those which result in anaphylaxis, Juvederm® may not be right for you. Those with an allergic reaction to lidocaine should avoid Juvederm® XC and Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC. In addition, if you have inflammation or infection at the site of injection, treatment should not occur until the issue has been resolved.
What to Expect during and after Treatment
A fine needle is used to inject Juvederm® into the area to be treated. This could cause you to experience slight discomfort during and after the procedure. Discomfort will be minimal if you opt for Juvederm® products containing lidocaine. It’s also possible that the site can be numbed before the injection.
For the first 24 hours following your procedure, you should avoid excessive exposure to sun or heat, strenuous exercise and alcoholic beverages. These things can lead to swelling, redness or itching. Be sure to ask your treatment provider when you can continue your regular cosmetic routine. Also report any side effects such as redness, firmness, tenderness, swelling, itching or bruising.
Juvederm® is a temporary procedure, but results can be expected to last for approximately nine months to one year. Follow-up treatments will typically require smaller injections to achieve desired results. During your consultation, our medical team can outline a treatment plan to ensure you get lasting results.
