For many of us, long-term sun exposure over the years combined with the natural aging process can cause age spots and sun spots to emerge, along with an increase in freckles. But there are treatments to reduce these effects of aging and help your skin regain a more youthful appearance.
At Southeastern Dermatology in Lumberton, N.C., Dr. Andrew A. Hendricks offers our patients Intense Pulsed Light Therapy treatments to help reduce signs of aging. To learn more about this treatment, called IPL, or to make an appointment, contact Southeastern Dermatology today.
What Is IPL?
IPL treatments are good for aging skin, can treat sun-damaged skin and also can help treat rosacea.
IPL therapy also can:
- Reduce broken capillaries.
- Target brown spots, age spots and freckles.
- Treat troublesome acne.
- Reduce fine lines.
During IPL treatment, the patient’s skin changes, from the inside out. Areas that Dr. Hendricks can treat with IPL include your face, hands, forearms and shoulders. Treatments have been proven safe and effective and no downtime is required after treatment.
Many dermatologists agree that photofacial IPL treatments are the best technique for removing age spots, sun spots, unsightly capillaries and other skin problems. At Southeastern Dermatology, Dr. Hendricks takes the time to meet individually with patients to discuss their medical and aesthetic goals to determine the most effective treatment plan.
What to Expect during Treatment
IPL treatments employ wavelengths that are designed to target melanin in skin lesions, often called sun spots, and hemoglobin in vascular lesions – which are broken capillaries. When treating sun spots, light is absorbed by your skin. This in turn damages the cells that prompt unattractive spots to emerge on your skin.
At Southeastern Dermatology, many of our patients report improvement to their skin following just a single session of IPL treatment. Other patients may need additional treatments to achieve desired skin improvement. How many treatments you require often depends on which part of your body will be treated and how much damage your skin has sustained.
Our IPL treatments at Southeastern Dermatology come with minimal recovery time. The vast majority of patients can apply makeup immediately and return to their jobs and normal routines.
Some patients may experience red skin for several hours after their IPL treatment. Patients’ skin may feel warm, but IPL treatment does not cause discomfort. Some patients may see freckles and spots become darker immediately after treatment. This is normal and indicates your melanin cells have been treated correctly. These darker areas should fade a few days after IPL treatment. Fading continues for two to three weeks.
During treatment, some people may feel the small flashes of light. Some patients report they feel a small pinching sensation. Most of our patients at Southeastern Dermatology report that IPL treatments are extremely comfortable. For those with sensitive skin, we can offer topical medications to numb the treatment area and eliminate any pain.
Following IPL treatment, patients should apply sunscreen to protect themselves. Doctor Hendricks and our team will provide patients with detailed post-treatment instructions to follow.
If age spots, sun spots and other skin problems are making you uncomfortable about your appearance, IPL treatments may be right for you. Contact Southeastern Dermatology today to schedule your IPL consultation.
