BOTOX® has been a popular cosmetic treatment option for more than 20 years. Since it was approved by the FDA in 2002, millions of individuals around the world have used this product to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on their face and neck. Besides helping a person to temporarily remove forehead furrows, skin bands on their neck, frown lines and crow’s feet, BOTOX® has also been used to treat a wide variety of health problems. It is even being used in modern dentistry.
Who Are Good Candidates?
BOTOX® is one of the best options available for treating unwanted facial wrinkles. At Southeastern Dermatology, our specialist will determine if you are a good candidate if you have wrinkles that BOTOX® commonly treats, such as wrinkles on the forehead, on the neck or between the eyes. The wrinkles need to be moderate to severe. Our medical professional will also look at your general health. They will discuss your goals to be sure that you have realistic expectations.
There are certain conditions that would disqualify a person from being a good candidate for BOTOX® treatment. For example, if a person has a neuromuscular disease, then this treatment would not be good for them. Also, if a person is taking medication that blocks the neuromuscular junction, then these injections would not be recommended. Some temporary conditions that would disqualify a person from using this treatment would include an infection near the area that is being treated, if a person is pregnant or breastfeeding or if they have a temporary severe illness. Other cosmetic treatments may be discussed if a person is allergic to BOTOX® ingredients or if they have a severe nerve or muscle condition, like ALS or myasthenia gravis.
What to Expect during Treatment
During treatments, the BOTOX® is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles to form on the face. After the treatment, you can return to normal activities. It is important to avoid touching or rubbing the area that was treated. It could take up to a week before a person will see the full effect of their BOTOX® treatment. But when all is said and done, they will notice that fine lines and wrinkles have vanished and they will enjoy a much more youthful appearance.
