CoolSculpting is a procedure that has been approved by the FDA and is an alternative to surgery to remove stubborn body fat. CoolSculpting, also called Cryolipolysis®, freezes fat cells that are then expelled by the body permanently. This technology was developed by researchers at a teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School.
Once the fat cells gone, the remaining layers of fat contract, resulting in a thinner frame. During the procedure, the CoolSculpting device is placed directly on treated areas and the fat cells beneath the skin are frozen. At first, the patient will feel pressure and intense cold, but that soon fades into a relaxing sensation. Most patients read, watch TV, or even nap during the procedure.
The process is non-invasive, allowing the patient to immediately resume their normal activities afterward. The length of the session depends on the size of the area and/or the number of areas being treated, but the average session lasts about an hour. While one session is usually effective, multiple treatments may be scheduled to achieve desired results.
Who is a good candidate?
CoolSculpting is designed for people who have localized fat in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not designed to be a treatment for obesity. Sometimes described as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting is generally used to treat the thighs, abdomen and flank (love handles).
Patients suffering from medical conditions that are affected by cold temperatures should not undergo CoolSculpting. Individuals in generally good health and have realistic expectations for this treatment are usually approved.
Are there side effects?
During the procedure, the patient may feel tugging, pulling, pinching, numbness or discomfort for a short amount of time. After the procedure, bruising, firmness, pain, redness, stinging, swelling, tingling, and temporary numbness may be experienced.
When will the patient see results?
The effects of CoolSculpting may take some time to become fully visible, but some patients see changes as early as three weeks after the treatment. In most cases, the most dramatic results are seen after two months. The body may continue to flush out frozen fat cells for as long as four to six months afterward.
