For years now, many people have been combatting the signs of aging with dermal fillers. Perlane is an injectable dermal filler made by the same company as Restylane®. It is used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and folds on the face.
Perlane can also be used to treat minor scarring, fill in hollow places on the face and plump up lips. It is similar to Restylane®, except the hyaluronic acid particles in Perlane are bigger than those found in Restylane®, so it is believed to be more effective in treating severe facial wrinkles and folds.
How Does It Work?
Perlane is made from non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Since it contains no animal products, it is less likely to cause an adverse reaction than a dermal filler that does contain such products. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally within the human body, which eliminates the need to perform an allergy test before administering the injection.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin and connective tissue. It can retain tremendous amounts of moisture and thus keeps a person’s skin smooth, firm and young-looking. As people age, their bodies produce less and less hyaluronic acid, and their skin becomes drier and starts to wrinkle. Perlane, therefore, works by replacing the lost hyaluronic acid.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
A Perlane treatment session is an outpatient procedure conveniently performed in our office. Depending on the size of the treatment area, it usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The results are immediately apparent and will last for six to eight months. After the treatment session, the client should avoid touching the treated area for six hours.
Who Should Not Use Perlane?
People with severe allergies, especially to gram-positive bacteria, should not use Perlane. People with skin infections, rashes, sunburns, hives and other skin conditions in the treatment area should wait until their condition has cleared up before getting injections.
