Ear surgery, also called an otoplasty, can be done on nearly everyone over the age of five. Of course, the patient does need to be in good general health to undergo surgery. If you are considering cosmetic ear surgery for yourself or your child, there are a wide range of options available.
Otoplasty for Protruding Ears
While plenty of people have ears that protrude, some cases can be downright embarrassing or distressing to the patient. This is especially true for children, who are often teased.
An ear surgery to correct this, commonly known as “pinning”, can be done as young as four or five years old. The procedure works equally well for adults.
A piercing that has gotten infected or been ripped out can leave behind a nasty scar, as can an accident. Earlobe reconstruction is also popular with people who have stretched their ear piercings to accommodate large gauges and now regret the decision.
If you have aesthetic concerns about your earlobes, ear surgery can often remedy the issue.
Ear Surgery for Malformations
The conch-shaped part of the outer ear is sometimes misshapen at birth or is damaged in an accident. A malformation can also occur when an ear is pierced improperly, especially when the cartilage is involved. If this has happened to you or a loved one, ear surgery can often correct the defect and create a matching set of ears.
Deciding If Now Is the Time
For children, cosmetic ear surgery needs to wait until their ears are fully formed. This usually happens around four or five years old. If the defect is obvious, it’s often best to have it done before the child begins attending school.
With that said, it’s also important that the child wants the procedure. If he or she likes their ears as they are and resists the idea of changing their appearance, it may be better to wait for the child to express interest before proceeding.
Adults can have ear surgery at any time, provided that they are in good general health and able to heal properly.
You’ll need a few weeks to heal before headphones, telephone headsets or muff-style ear protectors will be comfortable.
